2009 UMBC Graduate Student Fellowship

The Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology (GEST) Center welcomes candidate recommendations from the relevant UMBC departments offering graduate degrees for the 2009 GEST Graduate Student Fellowship. One (1) fellowship for the 2008-09 Academic Year will be awarded to a qualified, full-time degree-seeking graduate student in an Earth, biological, physical or computer science, mathematics or engineering discipline whose thesis research is aligned with similar research conducted within the GEST Center and NASA Goddard’s Earth Sciences Division. The fellowship is valued at a maximum of $34,000 for one year and renewable for one additional year, which includes: in-state tuition for a maximum of ten (10) credits per semester (all other fees are the responsibility of the graduate student), UMBC health insurance benefits and an annual stipend of $24,000. In addition, the GEST Center will fund limited travel for the student to attend one professional conference pertinent to the student’s field of study.

All recommendations sent to GEST must come directly from the department, therefore students interested in applying should contact their Graduate Program Director or thesis supervisor to be considered for this fellowship.

Qualifications and stipulations:

  • The fellowship is open to
    • An exceptional new student accepted into a department’s graduate program for Fall 2008
    • A current student registered for Fall 2008
  • The student must be enrolled full-time and maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
  • The student shows superior aptitude in their field of study and has a high potential for quality research.
  • The student and student’s graduate advisor are encouraged to seek a GEST faculty member to serve on the student’s thesis committee. For a complete list of GEST faculty, please see the faculty directory on the GEST website.
  • The student will be expected to present a poster of their research at the GEST/JCET poster session held at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

The student’s department must forward a copy of the student’s graduate school application and transcripts with a cover letter by the Department Chair or Graduate Program Director explaining why the department believes the applicant is an excellent candidate for this fellowship. The deadline to receive applicants for this fellowship is March 28, 2008. Selection will be made by the beginning of April.
