RESEARCH ENGINEER POSITION


Subject to funding approval, the Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology Center (GEST) will make Research Faculty appointments at the Research Associate, Assistant Research Engineer, Associate Research Engineer, and Senior Research Engineer levels as commensurate with experience. GEST is a Cooperative Agreement between the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to collaborate in research programs in the Earth, Information, and Instrumentation sciences. GEST is a Consortium whose members include UMBC, Hampton University, Howard University, and Caelum Research Corporation. Positions will generally be located either at GSFC or at the offices of one of the consortium members. More than one candidate may be chosen for some positions. All candidates must have degrees in an appropriate physical discipline and a demonstrated research record in accordance with the specific qualifications listed for each of the following positions:


GEST 613-94-325 Research Activity - Development of Small Spectrometer Systems

Research Engineer is required to develop, build and maintain small spectrometer systems, solar tracking devices, fiber optic technology, and spectrometer optics for use in an outdoor environment. The spectrometers will be installed at multiple sites where the engineer is to obtain data related to retrieving atmospheric trace gas amounts, such as, NO2, O3, H2O, HCHO, CHOCHO, SO2, and aerosol optical properties. Knowledge of radiometric and wavelength spectrometer calibration techniques using lamps and lasers is a necessity. The applicant must be experienced in making and interpreting sky and solar radiance measurements including polarization determination.

Requires - The position requires a Ph.D. in Physics or Engineering with advanced capability in electronics design, circuit board development, mechanical design, and knowledge of small motors, stepper motors, optical filters, and thermoelectric coolers. Programming capability is required in C and Python. Must have previous remote sensing instrument experience. Selection is contingent upon obtaining Goddard security clearance and possessing appropriate visa status to meet requirements for employment.
