RESEARCH SCIENTIST POSITIONS

Subject to funding approval, the Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology Center (GEST) will make Research Faculty appointments at the Research Associate, Assistant Research Scientist, Associate Research Scientist, and Senior Research Scientist levels as commensurate with experience. GEST is a Cooperative Agreement between the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to collaborate in research programs in the Earth, Information, and Instrumentation sciences. GEST is a Consortium whose members include UMBC, Hampton University, Howard University, and Caelum Research Corporation. Positions will generally be located either at GSFC or at the offices of one of the consortium members. More than one candidate may be chosen for some positions. All candidates must have degrees in an appropriate physical discipline and a demonstrated research record in accordance with the specific qualifications listed for each of the following positions.

GEST 610-67-229 Research Activity – Ocean Modeling Development

Research scientists required to participate in ocean modeling development within the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) of NASA GSFC, particularly focused on climate time scales, on surface mixing processes, and on high resolution global simulations. This research is part of the conduct of focused research relating to salinity variability in the tropical Pacific Ocean as well as ocean variability associated with ENSO phenomena. In particular, the work will involve collaborations within the GMAO related to modeling and prediction of Seasonal to Interannual variability, research on ocean data assimilation and the development of coupled bio-physical models. There will be a strong collaboration with the newly created Ocean Sciences Branch and its activities related to demonstrating the utility of sea-surface salinity measurements to be taken by the AQUARIUS mission currently scheduled for launch in 2009. The ocean models are state-of-the-art codes that run on massively parallel architectures at NASA’s world class supercomputer facilities.

Requires – A PhD in oceanography or a related field. It is essential to have experience with large scale ocean model codes on massively parallel machines.

Applicants should identify the position by number on a cover letter which includes home address and visa status, if any, and submit it together with a complete curriculum vitae, including the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of three references, to Dr. Tom Low, Associate Director, GEST/JCET, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Suite 320 5523 Research Park Drive, Baltimore, MD 21228. GEST partners are equal opportunity/affirmative action employers.
