Biography:
Dr. Tabacniks received a PhD in Sciences from the University of São Paulo, Brazil in 1991, doing research on urban and remote air pollution analysis by Particle Induced X-Ray Emission, PIXE. His PhD thesis on the development of PIXE analysis of extracted aerosols from fiberglass filters, opened new perspectives on aerosol research analyzing the polar and a-polar solubilities of atmospheric particles. From 1994-96 he served as a post-doctoral researcher at the IBM Almaden Research Center, S. Jose, CA on the application of Ion Beam Analysis (PIXE and RBS) of thin magnetic films, collaborating with the development of the magnetic spin-valve structures for magnetic reading heads in hard drives. Since 1996 he is the head of the Ion Beam Analysis facility of the Institute of Physics of the University of São Paulo, Brazil, doing his research mostly on the elemental analysis of materials ranging from thin films to archaeological objects and blood samples. More recently, he began research on ion beam implantation for the modification of materials, especially titanium aiming to accelerate its osteointegration. At UMBC he is doing his research on aerosol-cloud interactions mostly by laboratory characterization of ressuspended and laboratory generated aerosols.
